  • VENOM Edges Out DARK FIGURE OF CRIME in Close Weekend
  • by Pierce Conran /  Oct 10, 2018
  • THE GREAT BATTLE Slips to Third

Business jumped up considerably over the past weekend with two popular new titles breathing new life into the market after a slower than expected Chuseok holiday season. It was neck and neck between Hollywood and Korea as the former scored a 50% market share to the latter’s 49%.

Following a staggering 741,000 admissions (USD 5.77 million) debut on National Foundation Day last Wednesday, Sony’s Marvel title Venom topped that charts with 1.15 million viewers (USD 9.28 million) over the weekend and 2.08 million spectators (USD 16.39 million) over its first five days. It may not hold on to the top spot for much longer, but it should add a healthy amount to its strong start going forward.

Also no slouch in its debut was the local crime thriller Dark Figure of Crime with KIM Yun-seok and JU Ji-hoon, which opened to 439,000 entries (USD 3.41 million) on Wednesday and built momentum with strong word of mouth. It ended the weekend with 996,000 sales (USD 7.34 million), giving it 1.61 million admissions (USD 12.63 million) to date and seems poised to snatch away the top rank in the coming days.

Slipping 71% in its third weekend was the popular period siege drama The Great Battle. The war epic added 235,000 entries (USD 1.8 million), giving it a respectable 5.13 million viewers (USD 38.8 million).

Further down in fourth was the opening of Disney’s Christopher Robin with 127,000 spectators (USD 993,000) over the weekend and 228,000 tickets (USD 1.73 million) sold since Wednesday.

Rounding out the top five was local hostage thriller THE NEGOTIATION, down 89% with another 42,000 sales (USD 333,000) pushing its total to a decent 1.93 million admissions (USD 14.83 million).

This week’s major new title will be the remake of A Star Is Born but Dark Figure of Crime seems like the title to beat going forward.
