  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 09, 2018
  • 1987: WHEN THE DAY COMES Remains Steady over Solid JUMANJI Debut

Business remained brisk during the first weekend of the year as two homegrown hits continued to draw big crowds, with one of those rising on the all-time box office list. All told, 3.64 million tickets were sold with local releases accounting for 69% of sales.

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds clinched the top spot for the third weekend in a row as it slowed 47% for another massive 1.32 million viewers (USD 10.36 million). To date, the fantasy epic has drawn 11.5 million spectators (USD 86.78 million), which pushed it over Haeundae (2009) to become the 13th best-selling Korean of all time. The film should climb several more spots before the week is out.

Creeping up close behind was star-studded political drama 1987: When the Day Comes, which slowed just 22% as it sold another 1.06 million tickets (USD 8.36 million). To date the film has amassed an impressive 4.09 million entries (USD 30.8 million) and seems poised to overtake Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds during the coming week.

Getting off to a strong start despite huge local competition was the Hollywood family adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which bowed with 660,000 sales (USD 5.21 million) over the weekend and 895,000 admissions (USD 6.88 million) over its first five days.

Opening in fourth was animation Ferdinand with 247,000 viewers (USD 1.77 million) over the frame and 356,000 spectators (USD 2.46 million) since Wednesday.

Closing out the top five was local action-drama Steel Rain which slowed 59% as it brought in another 120,000 admissions (USD 936,000), giving it a robust 4.35 million entries (USD 32.53 million) to date.

Threatening to unseat the local hits this coming weekend will be Disney-Pixar’s animation Coco.
