  • Spectacular opening of the 17th Busan International Film Festival

    The 17th Busan International Film Festival with the theme ‘Diversity of Asian Films’ has opened on October 4. The opening ceremony was held at the outdoor stage of BIFF Square from 7 pm with the host, Korean actor AN Sung-ki and the hostess Chninese actress TANG Wei. Prior to the opening, a number of Korean wave celebrities JUNG Woo-sung, LEE Byung-hun, YOO Ji-tae and many other stars from all over Asia walked the red carpet amid the applause of the audiences and heated up the atmosphere. The chairman of the festival organizing committee HEO Nam-sik stated on the opening declaration that the committee has prepared more colorful programs in order to grow up to be a world-wide festival.
     
    The 17th Busan International Film Festival started out its big run of 10 days with a Hong Kong film Cold War as the opening title. Expanded with one more day, 304 titles from 75 countries have been invited to this year’s festival and these include 93 titles of world premieres and 39 titles of international premieres.
     
    The festival is organized into 11 different programs such as Gala Presentation which introduces new titles of the major directors, very first world premieres and controversial films (7 films from 5 countries), A window on Asian Cinema which shows the current trend of Asian films (49 films from 21 countries) and New Currents which is a competitive section to hunt for the talented Asian film makers (10 films from 9 countries). At the Korean Cinema Today-Panorama, 17 films including 6 unreleased ones are to be shown and at the Korean Cinema Today- Vision, 10 low-budget films that possess potential are planned to be introduced to the audiences.
     
    Along with TANG Wei who hosted the opening ceremony, many of the world famous stars as KWOK Aaron (Hong Kong), LEUNG Tony (Hong Kong), ZHANG Ziyi (China), JANG Donggun, Victorial ABRIL (Spain), Agnes JAOUI (France), KASE Ryo (Japan) are visitng Busan and some of the directors that have had a long relationship with BIFF such as Mohsen MAKHMALBAF (Iran), ZHANG Yuan (China), WAKAMATSU Koji (Japan), Krzysztof ZANUSSI (Poland) are to visit with their latest titles. 
     
    During the festival period Oct. 8- 11, at BEXCo, various programs are to be held such as KOFIC INDUSTRY FORUM sponsored by Korean Film Council, Asian Film Market (AFM), Asian Project Market (APM) and Asia Film comission. Film industry exhibition, a program that is to introduce film locations and the cutting-edge technologies. At this year’s exhibition, the largest number of cities, buyers and companies all around the world are planned to attend that are hoping to locate films, buy and sell image contents.
