  • Korean Film Archive's Youtube Channel Offers 83 Films Online

Korean film classics are gaining popularity overseas. The video-sharing service website Youtube announced on August 7th that 69% of the total viewers worldwide subscribing to the Korean Film Archive’s youtube channel (www.youtube.com/koreanfilm) were based internationally, according to a breakdown by country. Last May, the Korean Film Archive (KOFA) opened its classic film channel on Youtube offering 70 Korean film classics that range from the 1940s throughout the 1990s free of charge. Korean classics that may have been difficult for foreign viewers to access are now publicly released on Youtube. The countries with the highest viewership are India and the United States followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada and Japan, while other country viewers including those in South America and Europe are also showing strong numbers.

The most frequently viewed film is The Road to Racetrack (1991). Based on HA Il-ji’s book of the same title, this film directed by JANG Sun-woo, and starring KANG Soo-yeon, MOON Sung-keun and KIM Bo-yeon, portrays the contradictions of Korean society through the story of a man and woman. Other titles include Parrot Cries with Its Body (1981), directed by JUNG Jin-woo and starring JEONG Yun-hui, and Woman of Fire (1971) directed by KIM Ki-young and starring YOON Yeo-jeong, while LEE Doo-yong’s Mulberry (1985), representative of eighties eroticism, has proven to be a crowd-pleaser among the international audience. Meanwhile, the Korean Film Archive has recently added 13 new titles to their Youtube lineup. This will be a chance to see films that have been inaccessible online such as Sweet Dream (Lullaby of Death) (1936), An Old Potter and 301, 302 free of charge.
