This year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced the complete line-up for its Tiger Awards Competition. The 15-film selection includes Korean director LEE Kwang-kuk’s<Romance Joe>, which will make its international premiere. PARK Hong-min’s<A Fish> was announced earlier on as the competition’s first 3D film ever.

 

Lee Kwang-kuk previously worked for auteur director HONG Sang-soo on films such as <Woman on the Beach>, <Like You Know It All> and <Hahaha>. His feature debut<Romance Joe> was a recipient of the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Cinema Fund (ACF) Post-production support and made its world premiere at the Busan festival in the Korean Film Today: Vision section. M-Line Distribution is handling the film’s international sales.

 

IFFR describes <Romance Joe> and Lee as playing “the storytelling game with unmistakable pleasure in this elegantly shot first feature. In a web of intertwined stories, a film maker seeks inspiration and finds it with an energetic waitress who in return for some payment is willing to tell him about, for instance, the time she met a suicidal guy called Romance Joe.”

 

In its 17th year, Rotterdam’s Tiger Awards Competition is comprised of all first or second feature films which will compete for three Tiger Awards, each accompanied by €15,000.

 

The Tiger Awards jury this year is made up of actress and filmmaker Helena IGNEZ from Brazil, Ludmila CVIKOVA, Head of International Programming of the Doha Film Institute, Qatar and former programmer of the International Film Festival Rotterdam; Tine FISCHER, director of CPH:DOX, the international documentary film festival in Copenhagen, Denmark; filmmaker Eric KHOO from Singapore, who’s animated feature <Tatsumi> screens in the festival; filmmaker Samuel MAOZ from Israel, who’s first feature film <Lebanon> was launched as a CineMart project and went on to win the Golden Lion in Venice.

 

The Tiger Award winners will be announced on Feb. 3.
