  • Kim Dong-won documentary awarded at Sundance
  • Jan 27, 2004
  • Repatriation, a new documentary from acclaimed filmmaker KIM Dong-won, was presented with the Freedom of Expression Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. It is the first time a Korean film has ever been presented with an award at the prestigious U.S. festival. The documentary tells the story of several North Korean sympathizers who served long jail terms in South Korea as prisoners of conscience. Upon the prisoners' release in the early 1990s, director Kim got to know the men personally, and the documentary traces the next ten years until they were repatriated to North Korea. Kim is the director of such acclaimed documentaries as Sanggye-dong Olympics (1988), Haengdang-dong People (1994), and The Six-Day Fight in Myungdong Cathedral (1997). Repatriation will receive a commercial release at Hypertheque Nada in Seoul this coming March.
