  • Korean Theater Enters Guinness Book of Records

A new theater in Seoul entered the Guinness Book of World Records last week when its largest screen, at 34 meters wide and 13.8 meters from top to bottom, was deemed the world’s largest.

The record-breaking Super Plex G, which can seat 622 spectators, is part of the Lotte Cinema World Tower complex, a 21-screen theater which is currently under construction in the Jamsil neighborhood of Seoul. The cinema is housed in the new Lotte World Tower, the 123-floor and 555 meter structure that will become Korea’s tallest building when it is completed next year.

In addition to its size, the screen boasts other special features. Made with a water-based resin, it is eco-friendly and in order to provide every viewer with a comfortable viewing experience, the screen is curved. A special ceremony was held last Thursday (July 3rd), during which Jack Brockbank, a Guinness representative, presented Lotte Cinema with a qualification certificate.

Super Plex G replaces another local theater as the Guinness world record holder. The Starium Screen in CGV Yeongdeungpo, Lotte’s main theatrical exhibition rival, which had held the title since 2009. The Lotte screen, which was manufactured in France, was produced by Harkness Studios.
