  • SNOWPIERCER Tops the Box Office
  • by TAE Sang-joon /  Aug 01, 2013
  • THE TERROR LIVE Is Expected To Enjoy a Long Run

Snowpiercer and The Terror Live soar ahead of competitors on box office chart. Snowpiercer is the first to take the lead. According to the integrated ticket network at the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on August 1st, Snowpiercer, which opened on July 31st, topped the box office chart by drawing 418,469 spectators nationwide during its first day. The Terror Live starring HA Jung-woo took second place by recording 215,799, about half of the admissions recorded by Snowpiercer. Snowpiercer and The Terror Live accounted for 44.7% and 22.9% of the total ticket sales, respectively.

Snowpiercer, a BONG Joon-ho film, has become one of the most anticipated films of 2013 as the film is the most expensive Korean film ever made, stars top Hollywood actors such as Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell, and has received good reviews from film critics. Shortly before its premiere, Snowpiercer recorded a reserved ticket sales ratio of nearly 70%. Therefore, the film is expected to become a huge box-office hit on its opening weekend.

The Terror Live is also nothing to be sneezed at. The Terror Live, a low-budget film (a tenth of the production cost of Snowpiercer) compared to Snowpiercer, looks to attract audiences through the strong popularity of actor HA. The action thriller is expected to enjoy a long run on the strength of good reviews from film critics and strong word-of-mouth. The Terror Live and Snowpiercer ran neck and neck in terms of the number of screens. On July 31st, The Terror Live was screened 4,010 times at 673 screens while Snowpiercer was shown 4,394 times at 848 screens across the nation. In terms of seat occupancy ratios, Snowpiercer beat The Terror Live. On opening day, Snowpiercer recorded 47.4% while The Terror Live chalked up 30.5%.
