ROMANCE JOE, JURY and GOING PLACES Also Invited
A total of 18 films from Korean directors have found their way into the enormous lineup of the 15th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Films (BAFICI). Chief among the selection is a complete retrospective of
HONG Sangsoo’s body of work.
One of the most successful Korean cineastes on the festival circuit, HONG Sangsoo is a well-known figure to cinephiles who appreciate his humor and the subtle change evident across his distinctive body of work. This year Buenos Aires has opted to include a complete retrospective of his 14 films, starting with 1996’s
The Day A Pig Fell Into A Well right up until his most recent work
Nobody’s Daughter Haewon, which competed earlier this year at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. Also part of the program will be
Visitors, his contribution to the 2009 Jeonju Digital Project.
Other Korean works screening at the festival include
Romance Joe, the critically-acclaimed debut film of
LEE Kwang-kuk. Considering he is a former assistant director of HONG Sangsoo’s, perhaps his inclusion in the program should come as no surprise.
Jury, the debut short film of
KIM Dong-ho, the founder and honorary director of the
Busan International Film Festival, is also in the lineup along with
Going Places, another short that was co-produced with Argentina.
BAFICI gets underway on April 10th and will screen just over 400 films before closing on April 21st.
