  • Film Archives releases Kim Soo-yong DVD collection
  • Dec 21, 2011

  • The Korean Film Archives (KOFA) has released a four-disc DVD box set of master director KIM Soo-yong’s works. In addition to commentary on the films, the box set includes a documentary, a booklet by renowned critic KIM Young-jin, and other supplements. The DVDs come with English, Korean and Japanese subtitles.

Known as one of the leading directors of the golden age of Korean cinema in the 1960s, Kim Soo-yong (82) has directed more than 100 films. The new KOFA DVD box set highlights four black and white films including the remastered <Mist> (1967). Apioneering modernist film based on writer KIM Seung-ok’s story“A Trip to Mujin”, <Mist> stars YUN Jung-hee(also known as YOON Jeong-hee), the award-winning actress of the more recent film <Poetry>.

Yun also stars in another film included in the collection,<Night Journey>.The film follows the sexual rebellion and emotional journey of an “old maid” bank clerk who in her youth lost her first lover in the Vietnam War. The film was produced in 1973 but due to censorship was only released in 1977 with certain scenes removed.

Also in the collection, <Confessions of an Actress> (1967) bears witness to the movie-making industry of Chungmuro in the 1960s, and<The Seashore Village> (1965) tells the story of a widow whose beauty takes her through tribulations with men. Based on OH Young-soo’s original novel, the latter film was a leading work in the so-called “literary film” era.

Since 2007, KOFA’s DVD series has put out collections of works by Korean cinema giants SHIN Sang-ok, KIM Ki-young, YU Hyun-mok, and LEE Man-hee in consecutive years. Unlike the others, the latest in this Directors Collection series features commentary by director Kim Soo-yong himself. He is alternately joined by Kim Young-jin, HUH Moon-young, CHUNG Sung-ill, and KIM Hong-joon.

The Kim Soo-yong box set also has a 56-minute documentary on the director and before-and-after footage from the remastering process of <Mist>. Critic Kim Young-jin’s booklet about the director’s prolific work is in both Korean and English.

The DVD series is available for purchase at KOFA’s Sangam-dong headquarters in Seoul, and online through www.koreafilm.or.kr and other sellers.
