  • Gianna Jun to be in Ryoo’s Berlin File
  • Dec 19, 2011
Top Korean actress Gianna JUN, also known as JUN Ji-hyun from <My Sassy Girl>, is set to join the cast of director RYOO Seung-wan’s <The Berlin File> (working title). The spy thriller is due to star an A-list cast of HA Jung-woo (<The Yellow Sea>), RYOO Seung-bum (<The Unjust>) and HAN Suk-kyu (<The President’s Last Bang>) as well.
<The Berlin File> will be director Ryoo Seung-wan’s next film after his highly acclaimed <The Unjust>.The crime thriller screened earlier this year in the Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section and won prizes at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival as well as the recent Blue Dragon Awards in Korea.
In the upcoming film, Ha Jung-woo is set to star as a North Korean agent in Berlin who is betrayed and cut loose in the midst of a financial espionage intrigue. Jun Ji-hyun will play his wife, a translator at the North Korean embassy in Berlin. Together they try to escape being purged by North Korean killers, with Ryoo Seung-bum (the director’s younger brother) and Han Suk-kyu playing North and South Korean operatives on their trail.
With a budget of approximately US$9 million, <The Berlin File>has plans to start shooting early next year in Europe. CJ E&M is attached as the main backer. The project also took part in Busan’s Asian Project Market (APM) in October.
The director previously told <Korean Cinema Today> that he plans to make a “realistic, fast-paced, Korean-style espionage action film” and had also met with North Korean defectors and made a television documentary called <Spies> in preparation for the film.
