  • DreamWorks to Shoot Two Sisters Remake
  • by Nigel D’Sa (KOFIC) /  Jun 16, 2006
  • A Hollywood remake of KIM Ji-woon's 2003 horror-hit A Tale of Two Sisters will begin shooting three years after DreamWorks bought the remake rights to the film for US$1 million. DreamWorks snapped up the film quickly after the box-office success of its remake of Japanese horror movie Ring. A Tale of Two Sisters, which starred IM Soo-jeong and MOON Geun-yeong, had very good run in Korea, selling over 3 million tickets, making it the most successful Korean horror film to date. The Hollywood version is being adapted from the original by Craig Rosenberg, who wrote the screenplay for the film Jurassic Park 3. The remake will be the feature debut by director team Tom and Charlie Guard, who gained a reputation filming a string of innovative commercials. The Guard brothers studied film at Cambridge University and have produced several award-winning short films together. The DreamWorks production, like the original, will focus on two teenage sisters, Anna and Alex, who return home from a mental hospital, only to face struggles and harrowing ordeals from their less-than-kind stepmother. A clueless father and a lingering ghost add to the tense atmosphere. The film is scheduled to go into production this fall. Under the deal for the remake rights, DreamWorks will pay out an additional US$1 million when production commences. Other remakes of Korean films this year include The Lake House, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, adapted from Il Mare (2000), and an as yet untitled remake of My Sassy Girl.
