  • Chun Tae-il, Invited to the 26th Fantasia Int’l Film Festival Animation Competition
  • by Park Hyejin /  May 12, 2022

  •

Chun Tae-il, the animation that tells the story of the late Chun Tae-il, an activist for workers’ rights, has been invited to the Competition of the 26th Fantasia International Film Festival. On May 3, the film was invited to the Competition for feature films of the 46th Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which is called the Cannes Int’l Film Festival in the animation world, and the good news follows one after another.

The Fantasia International Film Festival said, "The story of Chun Tae-Il, whose ultimate sacrifice galvanized the labor-rights movement in South Korea, is one that still reverberates half a century later. Director Hong Junpyo’s Chun Tae-il honors its subject with emotionally charged storytelling and splendid visual craft. Tragedy and hope mixed in this Korean animated feature will appeal to all age groups.”

The Fantasia International Film Festival held in Montreal, Canada, is the largest genre film festival in North America. It is also a film festival where Korean animations have won awards and been invited. In 2012, The King of Pigs won the ‘Satoshi Kon Award’ and the Special Jury Mention for the NEW FLESH AWARD FOR DEBUT FILM. In 2014, The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow won the Special Jury Mention at the Animation Competition, and Beauty Water was officially invited to the festival in 2020.

2022 is also a meaningful year for the Fantasia International Film Festival. The festival will be completely back in shape in two years after going through the 2020 online film festival and the hybrid film festival, which combines online and offline events in 2021.

The festival, which will feature dynamic face-to-face events such as film festival screenings and workshops, will be held in Montreal, Canada from July 14 to August 3.
