  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 10, 2018
  • LEE Chang-dong Triumphs at 12th Asia Screen Pacific Awards

LEE Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed sixth film BURNING has added another prize to its trophy chest after winning the Jury Grand Prize from this year’s 12th edition of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). The Cannes-premiered film took the second place award at the awards show, while fellow Cannes competitor Shoplifters by KOREEDA Hirokazu earned the Best Feature Film prize.

Featuring YOO Ah-in (Veteran, 2015), Steven YEUN (Okja, 2017) and newcomer JUN Jong-seo, BURNING is based on the short story ‘Barn Burning’ by MURAKAMI Haruki. The film earned the FIPRESCI Prize and the Vulcan Award for the Technical Artist on the Croisette before opening in Korean theaters in May. In Korea, the film earned the Best Director and Best Music Award (for composer Mowg) at the Buil Film Awards in Busan in October.

Director LEE has previously had two films nominated in categories at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Secret Sunshine in 2007 and Poetry in 2010. Secret Sunshine earned the Best Feature Film Award at the first edition of the APSAs, while LEE won the Achievement in Directing Award. Beyond the Best Feature Film category, BURNING was also nominated for Best Screenplay, for co-writers LEE Chang-dong and OH Jung-mi.

Since its debut at Cannes, BURNING has been steadily screening at major festivals around the world, including the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival.
