  • 6 Korean Indies to Screen at Vancouver International Film Festival
  • by Pierce Conran /  Sep 17, 2018
  • New and Veteran Filmmakers Invited to Canada

The 37th edition of the Vancouver International Film Festival is set to feature six works from Korea this year, five features and one short. Leading the way in the ‘Gateway’ lineup are two of the biggest films from Korea’s indie realm this year: LEE Chang-dong’s BURNING and Hong Sangsoo's Grass.

BURNING, derived from MURAKAMI Haruki’s short story ‘Barn Burning' and featuring YOO Ah-in, Steven YEUN and newcomer JUN Jong-seo, bowed in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year. In February, the black and white drama Grass with KIM Min-hee was screened in the ‘Forum’ section of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Featuring in the ‘Tigers and Dragons’ lineup will be JEON Go-woon’s Microhabitat with E Som, which has burned an awards trail around the world following its debut last year at the Busan International Film Festival, as well as The Running Actress (2017), collection of three shorts directed by and starring MOON So-ri which constitutes the first feature film helmed by the legendary performer.

Also in VIFF will be LEE Seung-yup’s Vancouver-set The Darling, following its premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival this spring, and the animation The Bunny Odyssey by director YOON Tae-rang which is invited to the ‘International Shorts’ program.

This year’s Vancouver International Film Festival will take place from September 27 to October 12.
