  • ALONG WITH THE GODS Series Become Best-Selling Korean Films in Taiwan
  • by Pierce Conran /  Sep 13, 2018
  • THE TWO WORLDS and THE LAST 49 DAYS Claim Box Office Records in Island Nation

Mirroring its smash success at home in Korea, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days has met with great success in Taiwan. The fantasy sequel is now the second most successful Korean film of all time in the market, trailing only the performance of its predecessor Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017).

After scoring the largest opening in Taiwan for a Korean film, the fantasy epic held on to the top spot for three weeks and managed to surpass the total of TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) in just 20 days to clinch the number two spot in the market for a Korean title with USD 13 million. The first installment made it all the way to USD 16 million earlier this year.

From director KIM Yong-hwa and based on a webcomic by JOO Ho-min, the Along with the Gods franchise focuses on the exploits of a group of archangels who must guide two brothers through the seven trials of the afterlife in order to be granted reincarnation. HA Jung-woo, JU Ji-hoon, KIM Hyang-gi play the archangels in the series, while CHA Tae-hyun and KIM Dong-wook play the siblings who are guided in the afterlife in Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, respectively.

Back home in Korea, where it opened on August 1, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days scored several all-time opening records on its way to its current total of 12.24 million admissions (USD 90.56 million), the tenth largest haul for a Korean film of all time. The first film, released in December last year, forged a path to the number two all-time spot, with 14.41 million viewers counted (USD 102.39 million).
