  • THE SPY GONE NORTH Infiltrates Foreign Markets

  • Cannes Midnighter Off to a Good Start at Home and Overseas

    Adding to its promising start in Korea, where it bowed on August 8, the big-budget espionage drama The Spy Gone North is also off to a good run overseas, after scoring a strong per-theater average during its opening in North America, where it kicked off its run in a pair of theaters on August 10.

    The Spy Gone North opened in two CGV locations in California, where it scored a strong USD 21,674 per-theater average ahead of its full national rollout on August 17. Beyond that, the spy film will open in Australia and New Zealand on August 23, after screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, which is currently taking place. It will next enter the Hong Kong and Singapore markets on September 6, with Taiwan following a day later. Later on, the film will see the light of day in Europe, first of all in the UK on October 12, followed by France on November 7.

    Directed by YOON Jong-bin, known for Nameless Gangster : Rules of the Time (2012) and KUNDO : Age of the Rampant (2014), The Spy Gone North features HWANG Jung-min as an undercover agent codenamed Black Venus who posed as a businessman in Beijing in the 1990s, seeking to establish ties with North Korean officials in order to gain intelligence on the nation’s nuclear ambitions. The period drama co-stars LEE Sung-min, CHO Jin-woong and JU Ji-hoon

    The well-reviewed film bowed earlier this year among the Midnight Screenings lineup of the Cannes Film Festival. It was director YOON’s second time on the Croisette, after his debut, The Unforgiven (2005) screened in the Un Certain Regard lineup in 2006.

    After a week in theaters in Korea, the film has brought in 2.62 million viewers (USD 19.79 million) and currently holds the number one spot at the box office.
