  • 35th Busan International Short Film Festival Reveals Competition Sections
  • by Pierce Conran /  Mar 15, 2018
  • 42 International Works and 20 Korean Shorts to Screen in April

The 35th Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) is just around the corner and last month on the 28th they revealed the 62 titles that have been selected for this year’s International Competition and Korean Competition sections.

The list includes 42 international tiles from 35 different nations, as well as 20 short films made in Korea. The selection was whittled down from a total of 4,953 entries sent in from 129 countries, while 968 films were submitted from Korea.

This year’s preliminary jury consisted of 20 experts from the film field, 15 of which hailed from the local industry, while five more were invited from overseas. Over the course of three months, the jury members viewed a broad selection of works, with fiction titles accounting for around three-quarters of submissions, while the number of animations saw an uptick over previous years, accounting for around 15% of entries.

As in recent years, the most common theme to crop up in the screened titles was the effects of immigration on society. Due to the high completion level of the entries, the preliminary jury struggled to make their evaluations, as they considered the films based on ‘Short Filmness’ and ‘Issue Awareness’.

This year’s edition of the Busan International Short Film Festival will take place from April 24 to 29 in the Busan Cinema Center in the Centum City area near Haeundae Beach.
