  • CJ CGV Opened 100th branch in 11 Years since Entry to China
  • by KIM Su-bin /  Jan 17, 2018
  • CJ CGV’s Market Share Rose from 2% to 3%

CJ CGV, Korea’s biggest theater chain, has opened its 100th theater in China since entering the market 11 years ago. On December 30th, 2017, CGV opened its 100th movie theater in China, ‘CGV Shanghai Bei Waitan’, in Baiyulan Square in Shanghai, China, according to an announcement issued by the company on January 2nd. With the opening of this multiplex, the company has a total of 100 theaters with 793 screens in 48 cities across China, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. According to China’s entertainment research service center EntGroup, CJ CGV is the 7th largest operator in terms of box office in China as of the end of 2017. It is 15 places up from 22nd in 2012. Its market share also increased from 2% at the end of 2014 to 3%.

CJ CGV opened its first global multiplex, CGV Shanghai Daning, in Shangai in 2006. The launch of CGV Shanghai Bei Waitan brings the total number of CGV theaters in China’s largest city to 6. The new multiplex boasts 1,330 seats across 8 movie theaters and includes 4DX, IMAX and Gold Class venues. Moreover, Baiyulan Square, where CGV Shanghai Bei Waitan is located, is one of the core business districts planned by the local municipal government and is forecast to become a landmark of Shanghai in the future. Under the theme of Cultureplex, CJ CGV is expected to establish itself as a premium movie theater brand by offering various services. In addition, it has been concentrating on increasing its offering of special movie theaters based on various technologies such as ScreenX. This differentiation strategy seems to be the driving force to expand its business.
