  • Busan to Offer Artificial Intelligence-Based Robots at Film Studios
  • by KIM Su-bin /  Oct 05, 2017
  • City to Invest USD 5.3 Million, Complete Construction by 2020

Busan, the City of Film, will soon have artificial intelligence-based robots in its film studios. On September 18th, the Busan City Government announced its plans to revamp some of the local film studios by adopting Cinema Robotics from next year through 2020. The city is investing USD 5.3 million from both the central government and city budgets to create the system.

Cinema Robotics deploys technology that controls robot arms like those used in the autonomous manufacturing of cars as well as information and communications technology (ICT) to allow for an unmanned display control system. It can be used to control robotic arms for scenes where computer graphics are used. The process has been known to reduce production costs by quickly minimizing composition errors with computer graphics. The technology was used in the making of Hollywood blockbusters like Gravity and Wonder Woman and as well as big domestic projects such as Assassination (2015) and The Battleship Island

Along with Cinema Robotics technology, the Busan Cinema Complex will also offer a 3D production center and digital base with 3D virtual studios. “We will have improved film-making infrastructure by developing cinema robotics, and as a result, created a one-stop environment with visualization-based digital studios where realistic-looking high quality movies can be shot in one take for the first time in Asia.” a Busan official said adding “We plan to improve industrial competence in order to dominate and contribute to creating jobs in the high-value content market.”
