  • CJ CGV Reached 10 Million Viewers in Indonesia in Record Time
  • by Pierce Conran /  Sep 22, 2017
  • Korea-Based Company Ranked 2nd Among Exhibitors in Southeast Nation

Korean exhibitor CJ CGV announced that they have welcomed a record amount of viewers in Indonesia this year. Their exhibition network tallied over ten million visitors in the first nine months of 2017.

CJ CGV began operations in Indonesia back in 2013 when they acquired a majority share in the local theater chain Blitz. Prior to CGV’s involvement, the Blitz brand brought in four million viewers per annum and following the acquisition they steadily increased their presence in the market, reaching a milestones of seven million in 2015 before finally reaching ten million viewers in December last year.

The ten million milestone was reached three months quicker this year, demonstrating their consistent aggressive growth. Formerly known as Blitz Megaplex, the exhibitor rebranded as CGV this January. CJ CGV credits its growth to its expansion into provincial markets, its involvement with local film culture, and digital marketing.

The company now operates 35 theaters and 233 screens across Indonesia, making it the second largest exhibitor in the country. Furthermore, they plan to open 10 more locations across Jakarta and major provincial cities this year and to top 100 locations by 2020. CJ CGV plans to contribute to the growth of Indonesia’s burgeoning moviegoing culture with their proprietary screening technologies, which include 4DX and Screen X.

CJ Entertainment, a sister company of CJ CGV, is also making inroads into the market after scoring a hit with Sweet 20, the Indonesian version of their 2014 title Miss Granny. The film welcomed over a million spectators in Indonesia last year.
