  • KOREEDA Hirokazu to Lead 2017 Asian Film Academy
  • by Pierce Conran  /  Apr 07, 2017
  • BOO Junfeng and Mahmoud KALARI Appointed as AFA Faculty

The Asian Film Academy (AFA), which will return this October from the 6th, has announced its faculty for the year. Leading the educational program which runs concurrently with the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will be acclaimed Japanese director KOREEDA Hirokazu, who has presented several of his works at BIFF in the past.

Among KOREEDA’s famous works, many of which debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, are Nobody Knows (2004), Still Walking (2008) and Like Father, Like Son (2013). As this year’s AFA dean, he will share his experience with up-and-coming participants from across Asia.

Other mentors for this year’s program include Directing Mentor BOO Junfeng and Cinematography Mentor Mahmoud KALARI. BOO first took part in the Asian Film Academy as a participant in 2005 and debuted in 2010 with Sandcastle. He returned to Busan last year with Apprentice, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last May. KALARI collaborated frequently with the late Iranian master Abbas KIAROSTAMI.

The Asian Film Academy includes several programs, such as Workshop & Mentoring, Master Class, Special Lectures and Short Film Production programs. The program will run for 17 days, coming to an end on October 22nd. People wishing to apply to this year’s AFA can do so online (http://guest.biff.kr/submission/afa/index.asp) from March 20th until April 30th.
