  • OKJA Chosen as One of Cahiers du Cinema’s Most Anticipated Films of 2017

  • BONG Joon-ho’s Latest Drums Up Excitement Ahead of Release

Influential French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema revealed its most anticipated films of 2017 and among the list of ten titles was none other than BONG Joon-ho’s next film Okja, an English and Korean language production with an international cast that marks online giant Netflix’s first foray into Korean filmmaking.

Okja, the sixth feature length work by director BONG, was ranked on the list among incoming films such as Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck and James Gray’s The Lost City of Z. The story features a Korean girl who tries to protect a special creature from a greedy corporation. Young actress AHN So-hyun landed the lead role through extensive auditions, and will star alongside global names such as Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano.

BONG has previously featured on Cahiers du Cinema’s top 10 films of the year lists in 2006, when The Host ranked at third, and in 2010, when Mother came in at tenth place.

BONG is the director of modern Korean cinema classics such as Memories Of Murder (2003) as well as English language sci-fi Snowpiercer (2013), the most expensive Korean film of all time. Netflix will release the film at some point in the first half of the year on their online platform, while limited theatrical runs are being considered for both the United States and Korea.
