  • TRAIN TO BUSAN Becomes Top Korean Film in Singapore
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 22, 2016
  • Grows 50% in 2nd Weekend after Record Opening

Already the year’s most successful film in Korea, zombie thriller TRAIN TO BUSAN has achieved a new record by becoming the Korean film with the best ever box office opening in Singapore.

Distributed by Clover Films and Golden Village in the Asian city state, TRAIN TO BUSAN opened in second place behind the Warner Bros. hit Suicide Squad with USD 400,000. The previous top-opening-scoring Korean title in the country was BONG Joon-ho’s The Host (2006), which opened with USD 252,000 and eventually went on to make USD 507,000.

TRAIN TO BUSAN remained in second place in its sophomore weekend as it grew over 50%, recording a weekend score of USD 622,000. Surpassing the lifetime total of 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), the former top-grossing Korean title in Singapore with USD 727,000, TRAIN TO BUSAN has become the first Korean film to top USD 1 million in the country.

In Korea, TRAIN TO BUSAN, which is being distributed by Next Entertainment World (N.E.W.), remains in the charts and has now topped 11 million admissions (USD 80 million). Directed by YEON Sang-ho, formerly known for his gritty indie animations such as The King of Pigs (2011) and The Fake (2013), TRAIN TO BUSAN debuted as a Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year and has gone on the screen around the world.
