  • Korean Exhibitor Opens Two New Sites in Southeast Asia

Last month, Korean exhibitor Lotte Cinema launched two new sites in Vietnam, adding eight new screens to bring its count in the country to 111 screens. They opened one location with four screens and 483 seats in Ho Chi Minh City’s Now Zone shopping centre and another four-screen theater with 601 seats in Hanoi’s Big-C Mart.

According to Lotte’s estimates, the size of the Vietnamese box office market has increased fourfold since they began operations in the market in 2008. Last year, the industry generated approximately USD 100 million in sales. Korean rival CJ CGV also operates in the market, handling 32 sites in the country, making it the leading exhibitor.

After acquiring the Diamond Cinema Joint Venture Company (DMC) in 2008, Lotte Cinema opened sites across the country’s biggest cities, such as Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi and Danang, which the company targeted through market research as locations with high growth potential. Lotte plans to continue expanding their theatrical reach across Vietnam.

Currently the second largest exhibitor in South Korea, right behind local rival CJ CGV, Lotte Cinema also operates 11 locations with 90 screens in China, as well as one in Hong Kong, which opened earlier this year. Meanwhile, CJ CGV runs 19 locations in Indonesia, 64 in China, 4 in Myanmar and one each in Hong Kong and the United States.
