- Dankook Pair Compete in Asian New Talent
A trio of Korean films has been selected to compete at next month’s Shanghai International Film Festival. Going into its 18th edition, the Chinese fest has invited KANG Je-kyu’s drama Salut d’Amour to compete for its main Golden Goblet prize, while a brace of films from Dankook University’s Graduate School of Cinematic Content, KIM Dae-hwan’s End of Winter and JANG Woo-jin’s A Fresh Start, are up for Asian New Talent prize.Known previously for his big-budget blockbusters, such as 1999’s Shiri and the Korean War-set chart-topper TaeGukGi: Brotherhood of War (2004), director KANG Je-kyu performed an about-face this year when he released Salut d’Amour, a drama focusing on a tale of elderly romance, starring veteran thespian YOUN Yuh-jung. The film will measure up against eight other global titles for Shanghai’s top prize (though more titles are expected to be added. Last year, KANG was the jury president for the Asian New Talent competition.Following a Grand Prize win at the Jeonju Film Festival and a New Currents Award at the Busan Film Festival, A Fresh Start and End of Winter will compete among 15 films in the Asian New Talent competition. KIM’s End of Winter also screened at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Previously, ROH Deok’s Very Ordinary Couple picked up the competition’s top prize in 2013.The Shanghai film jubilee will open its doors on June 13th before closing on the 21st.
