On Tuesday March 31st, in the Yeouido Island CGV in the heart of Seoul, the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) held an event to announce the contents of it upcoming 16th edition, which will kick off on April 30th for 10 days. A varied slate of 200 films from 47 countries (158 features, 42 shorts) will be presented, led by Ariel Kleiman’s opening film Partisan from Australia.

 

Formerly known as the ‘Jeonju Digital Project’, the ‘Jeonju Cinema Project’ (JCP) will present its second lineup of feature length films next month. Two of the projects, which completed production a few weeks ago, come from local filmmakers: Samnye, from Echo of Dragon (2013) cineast LEE Hyun-jung; and Snow Paths, the new work from KIM Hee-jung, the Grape Candy (2012) director whom JIFF Head programmer KIM Young-jin mentioned ‘has been undervalued in the Korean film industry.’ Also on the cards is El Movimiento, from Argentine filmmaker Benjamin Naishtat.

 

This year’s International Competition jury will feature Geyong-ju director ZHANG Lu, Oasis (2002) actress MOON So-ri, Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hauser (Lourdes, 2009) and Greek actor Vangelis Mourikis (Attenberg, 2010). The Korean Competition jury will be comprised of Into the Into the Mirror (2003) director KIM Sung-ho and Mar del Plata International Film Festival programmer Marcelo Alderate.

 

Reflecting a structural change with its new slogan ‘expansion of space’, JIFF will move into the recently opened CGV Jeonju Hyoja, thereby increasing its screening and seating capacity to 420 and 90,000, respectively. In addition, JIFF’s ’Cinema street’ will become ‘Street of exhibition’, as it will play host to a pair of special exhibitions: ‘100 Films 100 Poster’, a collaborative exhibition between 100 of Korea’s top designers; and ‘WANG Bing: Art of Observation’, co-presented with Gallerie Paris-Beijing in France, which will showcase the Chinese filmmaker/photographer’s work.

 

Outside of JCP and the Korean Competition, Korean films this year will include new films by PARK Ki-yong (Motel Cactus, 1999), SHIN Yeon-shick (The Avian Kind), NO Zin-soo (The Suffered, 2014), LEE Sang-woo (Barbie, 2012), WHANG Cheol-mean (Oldmen Never Die, 2013) and BONG Man-dae (Playboy Bong, 2013), as well as KIM Dong-hoo’s Made in China and ROH Gyeong-tae’s Black Stone, which screened in Rotterdam earlier this year.

 

This year’s edition will present special focuses on Greek Cinema, Martin Rejtman and WANG Bing, entitled ‘Fallen Myth: Innovation in Greek New Wave’, ‘Martin Rejtman: The Cineaste of Black Humor’ and ‘WANG Bing: Art of Observation’.

 

Other major international titles to screen at JIFF include Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, Alex Ross Perry’s Listen Up Philip, Susanne Bier’s A Second Chance, Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and David Michod’s The Rover.
