CART, CONFESSION, HAEMOO and A HARD DAY in the Lineup
A quartet of Korean films have been invited to the 30th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which is set to kick off on January 27th. Screening in the International Competition will be
LEE Do-yun’s
Confession, while
Cart,
Haemoo and
A Hard Day will all be featured in the Pan Asia section.
Though little seen upon its commercial release in Korea, drama-thriller Confession, starring JI Sung, JU Ji-hoon and LEE Kwang-soo, has proven a hit with critics and festival goers, screening at the Toronto and Singapore International Film Festivals.
Following its debut in Toronto,
BOO Ji-young’s social drama
Cart stars YUM Jung-ah, MOON Jeong-hee and KIM Young-ae as laid-off supermarket workers who go on strike. The film has also screened at the Busan and Hawaii International Film Festivals.
Another underperformer at home but a big hit on the festival circuit is
SHIM Sung-bo’s
Haemoo, which also credits
Bong Joon-ho as executive producer and co-writer. The dark naval thriller with KIM Yun-seok and PARK Yoo-chun has impressed audiences at the Toronto, San Sebastian, Vancouver and Busan film festivals to name but a few. Haemoo is also part of the non-competitive special presentations lineup.
Rounding out the Korean film roster at Santa Barbara is
KIM Seung-hun’s action thriller
A Hard Day, which debuted in the Director’s Fortnight section of last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Widely appreciated on the home and international front, the film stars LEE Sun-kyun and CHO Jin-woong.
