Ten Southeast Asian Countries Represented
The very first Asean Film Festival, founded in accordance with the Asean-ROK Commemorative Summit, was held from November 27th until December 4th. Sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Busan International Film Festival, the event was held at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul.
The works included hailed from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines in addition to other countries. The event opened with Teddy SOERIAATMADJA’s Maida’s House from Indonesia and closed with The Missing Picture, a Cambodian film from Rithy Panh which was invited to the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Although the event was a small one, it gave a rare opportunity for both Korean audiences to experience new contents, and for international residents to watch films from home. The screenings were followed by talk with filmmakers or film related representatives. All screenings were free of charge.
It hasn’t been announced if the festival will continue to run next year, but it would be a good opportunity to strengthen relationships with neighboring film industries.
