  • BIFF to Stage JUNG Jin-woo Retrospective
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 21, 2014
  • 8 Films from Classic Korean Auteur in Busan

Last week, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) announced that it will be staging a Korean Cinema Retrospective on classic cineaste JUNG Jin-woo for its upcoming 19th edition. Eight of the auteur’s main works will be presented next month in Busan.

The Korean Cinema Retrospective is an annual staple at BIFF that seeks to expose classic films from the pivotal Korean film figures that paved the way for today’s Korean film industry to a wider public.

Starting with The Only Son in 1962, JUNG Jin-woo was a key filmmaker in Korea who directed 50 features through to the mid-1990s. A socially minded director, JUNG frequently pointed his camera on issues surrounding the separation of the peninsula as well as societal class barriers in his 1960s melodramas, while in later decades his focus also turned to the plight of women in society. JUNG was also a prolific producer, responsible for 130 works under the Woo-jin Film shingle, including IM Kwon-taek’s Testimony (1973).

BIFF’s JUNG Jin-woo retrospective will include screenings of his key works, such as Green Rain (1966), A Student Boarder (1966), The White Crow (1967) and Does Cuckoo Cry at Night (1980). The program also features Border Line (1964), Oyster Village (1972), The Rose that Swallowed Thorn (1979) and The MA-NIM (1984).

Previously directors and actors that have been the focus of BIFF Korean Cinema Retrospectives include KIM Ki-young (1st BIFF) KIM Soo-yong (7th BIFF) and IM Kwon-taek (18th BIFF). The 19th Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 3rd to 12th.
