While Bong-wan (KWON Hae-hyo) sits and eats breakfast alone at dawn, his wife asks him if he is having an affair. He can’t answer and the atmosphere is frozen. In fact, it’s been a long time since Bong-wan has been cheating with Chang-sook (KIM Saebyuk), the only employee of his publisher. He is so tormented that he sometimes cries buckets because he cannot desert his family or leave Chang-sook.

Meanwhile, it is the first day on the job for Areum (KIM Min-hee). She has started working in literary critic Bong-wan’s company, whom she has respected. After having lunch with Bong-wan, Aerum comes back to the office alone and is attacked by a strange woman. It is Bong-wan’s wife who has mistaken Areum for her husband’s lover. Bong-wan shortly returns to the office, and the three of them talk, but her misunderstanding is not easily cleared up.

Selected for competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, The Day After is HONG Sangsoo’s third black and white movie after Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors (2000) and The Day He Arrives (2011). It has more aggressive flashback sequences than his previous films, and this intentionally makes the film vague at time. It is also actress KIM Min-hee’s third movie with HONG after Right Now, Wrong Then (2015) and On the Beach at Night Alone while KWON Hae-hyo returns as a character reminiscent of his previous one in Yourself and Yours (2016).
