  • KOFIC Has Announced the Report on January 2017 Korean Film Industry

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has announced the Report on January 2017 Korean Film Industry. According to the report, 23.25 million moviegoers went to theaters in January 2017. It is a number that grew by 6.34 million, up 37.5% from the same time last year. The main reason for this explosion is Korean films. The viewers for local movies recorded 12.68 million, which rose by 5.04 million compared to the same period of 2016. It jumped as much as 66%. In addition, the number of audiences for foreign films increased up 1.3 million (14%) year-on-year to 10.57 million.

In terms of sales, the growth is more remarkable. Total sales in January 2017 was USD 167 million which rose by USD 49.6 million from the same period last year. This signifies a rise of 42.3%. Sales of domestic films during the same time was USD 91.6 million, up USD 38.55 million (72.6% increase) while that of foreign films was USD 75.3 million, which rose by USD 11 million (17.3% increase).

The locomotives are two local films released on the same day (January 18th): Confidential Assignment (distributed by CJ Entertainment) and The King (distributed by NEW). Both attracted more than 4 million moviegoers each for a month in January. The winner of the month was Confidential Assignment. It demonstrated surprising endurance and reversed the direction of the game just before the Lunar New Year’s holiday, although it was outplayed at the beginning. Its number of viewers in January was 4.86 million, followed by The King with 4.11 million admissions. Meanwhile, Master, which was released on December 21st 2016, brought 2.11 million audiences in January this year.
