    • Seeking ways to build a virtuous-cycle ecosystem for the Korean film industry through public–private cooperation
    • At the first meeting on September 1, KOFIC Chairperson Han Sang-jun and Kim Jho Gwang-soo, Co-Representative of the Film Festival Policy Group, were elected as Co-Chairs
    • Public hearing “Asking About New Governance for Film and Moving Images in the Platform Era” to be held on September 22 at the Korean Film Archive

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC, chaired by Han Sang-jun) has launched the “Special Committee for the Sustainable Development of Korean Cinema” to help the Korean film industry overcome its crisis and build a sustainable ecosystem, and will strengthen its communication with industry professionals.

On Tuesday, September 1, KOFIC launched the Special Committee for the Sustainable Development of Korean Cinema (hereinafter the “Special Committee”) at the Film Education Support Center in Seoul and held its first official meeting. The Special Committee is the result of a joint effort by KOFIC and film industry stakeholders to restore the creative, production, investment, and distribution ecosystem of Korean cinema and to develop effective policy alternatives through active dialogue with working filmmakers. The launch is particularly significant in that it elevates KOFIC’s ongoing efforts to engage with the field, institutionalizing them as a standing consultative body rather than a one-off roundtable.

Composed of four KOFIC commissioners, including Chairperson Han Sang-jun, together with private-sector members from the film community who bring professional expertise from within the industry, the Special Committee will operate through December 31, 2026. At the first meeting, the members elected KOFIC Chairperson Han Sang-jun and Kim Jho Gwang-soo, Co-Representative of the Film Festival Policy Group, as Co-Chairs by mutual vote. Going forward, in order to address the film community’s pending issues swiftly and substantively, the committee plans to pursue activities on multiple fronts, including: restoring a virtuous-cycle ecosystem and stimulating investment; broadening the base for film appreciation; improving financing and institutional frameworks; and improving the creative environment.

The Special Committee will not confine itself to regular meetings but will also continue outreach efforts to gather firsthand voices from the field. On Tuesday, September 22, it will hold a public hearing titled “Asking About New Governance for Film and Moving Images in the Platform Era” at the Korean Film Archive, where it plans to hold in-depth discussions with film and moving-image professionals on the future of Korean cinema and measures for its development amid a rapidly changing environment.

“The launch of this Special Committee is a sincere step toward building a sustainable future for Korean cinema together with filmmakers,” said Co-Chair Han Sang-jun. “Through regular meetings, public hearings, and other channels, we will continue to listen to the voices of the field without reservation and actively reflect them in substantive policy, so as to lead a resurgence of the Korean film industry.”

Co-Chair Kim Jho Gwang-soo said, “I hope the launch of this Special Committee will serve as an occasion for the film community and the Korean Film Council to become ‘one team’ again, thinking through and solving problems together for the sake of Korean cinema.”
