  • by June Kim /  Mar 26, 2015
  • CART’s Young Actor Nominated at the Asian Film Awards

DOH Kyung-soo, also known as D.O., is a member of the idol k-pop group EXO. However, through his role in Cart, he is no longer seen as a singer but also as an actor. His realistic reflection of a young troubled teenager in the film was a memorable performance that the jury of the Asian Film Awards recognized. For his follow-up project after Cart, DOH had performed in the TV series It’s Okay, That’s Love, further expanding his career in acting. Just before the 9th Asian Film Awards took place in Macao, KoBiz sat down with DOH for a few minutes.

Congratulations on being nominated as a Best Newcomer at the 9th Asian Film Awards. How do you feel?
Just to have my name on the nomination list for the awards is a great honor. I’m so thankful to be here today.

Cart was your first film as an actor. Were there any difficulties you faced as a newcomer in the field?
Cart was my first film and it is also my first time acting. It was really hard because I’ve never done anything like it before, and it’s still difficult for me even now. But after having many discussions with director BOO Ji-young, she led me and helped me understand the character better. Thanks to her, I was able to finish the film without too much trouble.

Cart is a film that talks about the problems of contract workers and working conditions in contemporary Korean society. As one of the youngest main characters, you were able to show the discrimination towards the young while the actors mostly dealt with the discrimination towards women. Have you experienced discrimination in your own life?
I don’t think I have directly experienced discrimination but I’ve had a part-time job just like the character in the film. To be honest, it’s hard for me to understand the problems of contract workers versus full time works in my point of view as a student. However, with my experience working part-time, I think I can understand a little bit. Also, through performing in the film, it was a good experience for me to appreciate more about our parents and what they go through.

Director BOO Ji-young praised you for your acting. She mentioned that you’re highly concentrated, even going beyond what is asked of you. When did you first become interested in acting?
I’ve always wanted to become a singer since I was small, but acting has also been my passion. I think even if I don’t look good it’s still part of the performance. I’ll do my best to become a good actor who can show promising performances.

Are there any characters or films you’re hoping to engage in the future?
My characters in the film and in the TV series were both students. I want to try diverse characters that I can act at my age. I also want to take an adult role soon.
I think my characters were what you call ‘good guys’. I’d love to challenge myself and try an antagonist role in the future.

How do you feel about being cast in a melodrama?
Absolutely. If I have a chance, I’d like to try all genres of film.

Are there any films or projects you have lined up?
There is a project we’re looking at right now, but it’s still under consideration. Either way, I hope to come back with a new work soon to share with my fans. I’m look forward to doing my best and to show good work to my fans and the audiences.
