  • Winners of Korean Summer Box Office in History

Captain America: Civil War, released on April 27th, has reached the 2nd place in the 2016 Korean box office, attracting 8.6 million viewers as of May 27th. The difference to A Violent Prosecutor at the box office throne is only 1.1 million or so. However, it is too early for Captain America: Civil War to be assured for victory.

In Korea, the more advantageous in the summer season have been domestic films. The WAILING is doing great with 5.2 million admissions in just 2 weeks since its release on May 12th, and The Handmaiden, the most promising movie of this season, is booked for June 1st release. The Tunnel and The Last Princess are also in the summer lineup.

For the last few years, the winners of the summer season in the domestic film market have mostly been Korean films. Last year, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, released on April 23rd, was about to be the winner of the year with 10.4 million viewers, but something that nobody quite expected happened in August. Two Korean films, Veteran and Assassination, reached 10 million admissions respectively. Veteran, the final winner of the 2015 Korean box office, was released on August 5th and received 13.4 million viewers, and Assassination, released 2 weeks prior on July 22nd, marked the 2nd place in the box office with 12.7 million admissions.

One year prior, in 2014, a remarkable record was made, which still holds. Roaring Currents, released on July 30th, earned 17.6 million admissions, and is still at the number one place in the all time Korean box office. The winner of the 2013 summer season was also a Korean film. The box office number one of the year was Miracle in Cell No.7, released on January 23rd, with 12.8 million viewers, but in terms of the summer performance, the winner was Snowpiercer, released on August 1st. The number of viewers that this film attracted was 9.34 million. In 2012, The Thieves, released on July 25th, became the winner of both the summer season and the entire year with 12.98 million admissions.

You have to go back as far as to 2011 to find a foreign film at the number one place in summer in the Korean box office. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, released on June 29th, hit the number one place of the year with 7.78 million viewers, but this number is rather weak compared to other winners of the summer season.

The summer battle for this year has already begun. It is a tormenting war for those who fight, but for the viewers who watch and enjoy it, it is probably the biggest and funniest feast of the year. Which film will be sent to the Hall of Fame this year? It all depends on the fingers of the viewers who pick and click the film they want to see.
