  • The Battle of Korean Films in Summer Season

It has been a while that the summer season in Korean box office has become a battlefield for domestic films. Captain America: Civil War, the first Hollywood blockbuster this summer, was released a few days prior to May, which is often referred to as the beginning of the summer season, but for Korean films, now is the beginning.

THE WAILING, released on May 11th, had a great start with 4 million admissions as of May 21st. Among all the May released films, THE WAILING made the fastest record to reach 4 million viewers. Among the films to follow, the most promising is definitely The Handmaiden by PARK Chan-wook to be released on June 1st. It is making even greater news once invited to the Competition at Cannes Film Festival, and in the market, has become the Korean film sold to the most countries, as many as 176. The previous record was held by Snowpiercer (2013), sold to 167 countries.

TRAIN TO BUSAN, YEON Sang-ho’s zombie movie that has been invited to the Midnight Screenings section at Cannes Film Festival, is to be released in July. Its box office performance is all the more promising as it is a combination of zombie and action, a great combination for the summer season. There is another blockbuster which suits the season. It is The Tunnel featuring BAE Doo-na and HA Jung-woo, a story of a man stuck in a collapsed tunnel, booked for release in August.

The Korean Independence Day is also in August. The Last Princess by HUR Jin-ho, although not a blockbuster, suits the season well, featuring the last princess of Joseon Dynasty. It is interesting to see if The Last Princess could make a similar success to Assassination, which swept the last summer season with the Joseon army for independence at the center of the film.
