  • Spring Comes with Film Festivals

  • Film Festivals to Be Held in Korea April-May

Winter gets longer year by year, but spring is sure to come. When the weather is warm with the bright sunshine and breeze, who wouldn’t want to go out? Here are some film festivals to visit in this beautiful season.

Busan International Short Film Festival has a long history, which began in 1980. This year it takes place from April 22nd through 26th. It only screens short films, but has a great presence for its own right. The preliminary jury says to have made the selection according to “‘the short film-ness’ that makes a short film a short film, containing what only can be contained in a short film as opposed to a feature film, and ‘the social awareness’ which defines the form and content of the work.”

The 10 days starting from April 28th is when Jeonju International Film Festival is to be held. This film festival aimed at alternative films right from the beginning in 2000, and since it takes place at the end of April through early May when the season is ripe with warm breeze, in a traditional city with cultural monuments and delicious food, this festival is also attracting many tourists. The screening list includes Our Love Story by LEE Hyun-ju, depicting the love between two women, and Curtain Call by RYOO Hoon, telling the back stage story of a theater group.

Green Film Festival in Seoul takes place from May 6th through 12th. As the spring is getting shorter every year due to global warming, this film festival is probably the most suitable one for the season. It is also a great place for a family event, as a special children and youth program called Cinema Greenteen is operated, which consists of film screenings, activities and exhibitions.

To conclude the season is Seoul International Food Film Festival (May 26-31). It opened last year with the opening screening of Sweet Red Bean Paste, a sweet and warm movie. This delicious trip to films is awaiting the audience again this year, where you may communicate with each other and understand the world through food for 6 days.
