A Violent Prosecutor starring HWANG Jung-min and GANG Dong-won has made the all time Lunar New Year Holiday box office number 1. Released on Feb. 3rd, A Violent Prosecutor attracted 4.76 million viewers for 5 days starting from Feb. 6th, the first day of the holidays, making a new record. Considering this year’s Lunar New Year Holiday being as long as 5 days, it is still a very impressive performance. This film is already aiming at the title of 10-million-viewer-movie, just in 10 days since its release, with 7.53 million viewers as of Feb. 13th.It has been almost a tradition that the winner of Lunar New Year Holiday box office should be a family movie or a comedy, which every member of family can enjoy comfortably. To be sure, in 2015, Detective K : Secret of the Lost Island, a comic detective story, was the winner, and in 2014, it was Miss Granny, a family comedy, which conquered the theaters. A Violent Prosecutor is also a comedy of some sort, where a prosecutor and a swindler team up for a big game. In the 1980s and 90s in Korea, it was almost a routine to watch a Jackie CHAN comedy on TV or in theater during the Lunar New Year Holiday.To be sure, also for the last few years, the winners of Lunar New Year Holiday box office were mostly comedy. In 2015, the Lunar New Year Holiday was 5 days long, and the winner was Detective K : Secret of the Lost Island, with 1.97 million viewers. In 2014, it was Miss Granny which attracted 2.17 million viewers for 4 days.In 2013, the holiday was only 3 days long. Right until the holiday began, the winner was The Berlin File, an action thriller, but as the holiday began, a reversal was made with Miracle in Cell No.7, a human comedy. Receiving 1.63 million admissions in just 3 days, it kept the first place in the box office for two weeks after the holiday and finally made itself to the 10-million-viewer-movie list.Dancing Queen also showed a great reversal with an impressive box office performance in the 2012 Lunar New Year Holiday. It is a family comedy featuring a middle aged housewife who wants to become a singer, and sold 1 million tickets in 4 days. Going back further to 2011, you see a familiar name once again. Detective K : Secret of Virtuous Widow enjoyed victory with 1.70 million viewers during the long Lunar New Year holiday that year which lasted 5 days.Looking back on the last 6 years since 2011, it is clear that most audience went for a heartful laughter in the Lunar New Year Holiday theater. Despite what may come this year, at the beginning of a new year, we all want to share a good laugh and be happy, don’t we?
