  • "Tom Cruise Effect” on Box Office?
  • by Kim Hyun-jung /  Aug 10, 2015
  • Tom’s Box Office Run, Who Has Come to Korea for the 7th Time

The time has been ripe and finally he came. It has been 2 years since Tom Cruise was in Korea last time. He visited this country as many as 7 times in 20 years, which makes on average once in every 3 years. And this time, Tom stayed as long as 2 nights and 3 days, and even left a hand written letter.

Tom came to Korea for the first time in 1994 with Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles and regularly paid visit to this country ever since, with Mission: Impossible Ⅱ, Vanilla Sky, Valkyrie, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and Jack Reacher. For Vanilla Sky, he accompanied with his lover Penelope Cruz, and he went as far as to Busan at the south end of Korea with Jack Reacher. So why does he come so often? To promote the film, to be sure, but then, just how helpful is a 52-year-old Tom Cruise?

Mission: Impossible Ⅲ attracted 416,000 viewers in Korea for the first 3 days, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol had 597,000 viewers for the same length of time. However, in the States, the results were the opposite, with the release weekend ticket sales of Mission: Impossible Ⅲ being 47.74 million US dollars and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 29.95 million US dollars.

However, the Tom Cruise effect does not always work. While Jack Reacher that Tom came to Korea and promoted only had 161,000 viewers for the first 3 days, Edge of Tomorrow received 469,000 viewers without Tom. Further, a far less famous film Oblivion attracted 215,000 viewers in Korea without Tom to promote the film, making people wonder what the incredible budget for having a Hollywood top star stay in Korea is for.

Still one thing is clear: Tom Cruise is mightier than Arnold Schwarzenegger. Except for his visit in 2010 as the Governor of California, Arnold came to Korea for the second time with Terminator Genisys since The Last Stand, only to lose the box office number one place to Northern Limit Line in 6 days which was released 2 weeks prior, with 0.51 million viewers for the first 3 days. On the other hand, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation attracted 766,000 viewers, and stayed at the number one place in the box office one more day. It is also noteworthy that its opponents were mighty local hits Assassination and Veteran.
