What would an afterlife be like? The question is both curious and frightening because no one knows the answer. Recently, movies about the afterlife have become popular. Locally the best known movie is definitely Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds. The story begins with the death of the main character. In the beginning of the movie, firefighter Ja-hong dies unexpectedly in order to save a kid and is taken to the afterlife by three guardians. During the seven trials he endures for murder, indolence, falsity, injustice, treachery, violence and family morals, the world after death changes a lot. From an ice castle to a forest full of trees with blades, the afterlife in this fantasy film is horribly fearful but adventurous like a theme park.Pixar’s animated film Coco depicts the afterlife like a cheerful carnival. It is a world where the living and the dead connect through beautiful memories. Re-released after 17 years, KOREEDA Hirokazu’s Wonderful Life tells a story of the afterlife that is more heartwarming and emotional than that of Coco’s. In the film, there is a limbo where the recently deceased stay for a week. While there, they have to select a single happy memory to re-experience for eternity. What would I choose? It is a movie that makes one ponder a serious question. Hollywood supernatural drama A Ghost Story shows the boundaries between life and death, rather than describing its details. The main character of the movie is a restless soul who cannot go to heaven and instead wanders through this world.
