- Interesting Korean Cinema Numbers from the First Half of 2017
Winter this year was warm. The Korean film industry started this Lunar New Year with new hopes. Actress KIM Min-hee kicked off a season of good news by receiving the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival, the first Korean actress to do so. Meanwhile Confidential Assignment set the box office record for the first half of this year. There were, however, no “10 million” attendee blockbuster films during the period.The good news concerning film festivals continued through the first half of 2017. Five Korean films were invited to this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and among them, The Villainess was pre-sold to 136 countries. Moreover, the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) achieved a triple crown by having set all-time records for ticket sales, screening and attendance.This year saw many directors returning to the fold after long hiatuses. Bluebeard is the first film released by Director LEE Soo-yeon in 14 years while similarly directors PARK Kwang-hyun and CHUNG Yoon-chul returned with Fabricated City and WARRIORS OF THE DAWN after 11 and 9 year absences respectively. Meanwhile, veteran actor LEE Gyoung-young has appeared in a movie about once a month in various films such as MISBEHAVIOR, New Trial, The Prison, The Mayor, The Merciless and REAL.Documentary film OUR PRESIDENT, which attracted 1.83 million moviegoers, was a dark horse in the first half of this year. Made with a production cost of USD 520,000 (including marketing expenses) the film has so far managed a total of USD 12.5 million in ticket sales.
