Sequels Race Against Their Originals
When a movie manages to become a box office or critical success, a sequel film is planned. Recent action blockbuster Kingsman: The Golden Circle fits right into this formula. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) wrote a new page in the book of spy action movies. It was immensely popular all over the world and also created the ‘Manners Maketh Man’ trend bringing 6,129,681 moviegoers in Korea. With the original having had a stellar run at the box office, the spy sequel received a lot of attention even before its opening. However, the sequel was unable to exceed its predecessor. Though it was released on 1,687 screens nationwide, more than twice its original film, it has only drawn 4,942,506 moviegoers as of November 3rd.
Although Blade Runner was a box office disaster when it was released in 1982, the sci-fi movie was reappraised as an unlucky masterpiece and was reborn as Blade Runner 2049 by a new director. It is rare for a ‘failed movie’ to be awarded a sequel, but critical praises eventually led to the world of Blade Runner being revisited. Fortunately, the sequel did better than the first one at the Korean box office. The original Blade Runner was released on 1 screen and drew only 129 viewers while its sequel was seen by 315,750 viewers at 664 screens. Despite belonging to the documentary genre, Buena Vista Social Club (1999) had a great resonance and led Cuban music fever in Korea. Its sequel recently recorded about 3,000 viewers. This is less than expected but it was meaningful to evoke memories of the first movie.
