After proving his ticket selling power, actor
SON Hyun-ju of
Hide and Seek returns with the makers of A Hard Day for the thriller,
The Chronicles of Evil. SON plays a detective CHOI, who falls into trouble. CHOI is a highly decorated homicide detective with an extraordinary closure record. On his way home one evening, his taxi driver stops in the middle of nowhere, pulls a knife on him and the two of them engage in a bloody fight. When the driver dies at hands he fears this incident may affect his career and so he cleans things up and flees. But CHOI can’t escape his act: the driver’s body winds up displayed in front of the police station the next day and he himself is assigned to the case. However, his ordeal doesn’t end there when a man turns himself in knowing full well he’s the killer and demands he reopen an old case, leading him to a broader plot for revenge.
This is SON’s return to the silver screen after a two-year break. SON commented that
The Chronicles of Evil “had a strong story that was fast-paced from beginning until the end, and decided to board the film after reviewing the scenario.” Director
BEAK Woon-hak who previously worked on dramatizing
Swiri and directed the action thriller
Tube, returned with a psychological thriller after twelve years of absence. Producer
JANG Won-seok of
A Hard Day, which received many positive responses from Cannes last year, said that director BEAK was contacted during
A Hard Day’s shoots and decided to sign on for the production. Director BEAK commented, “I hope the audiences will be able to identify with detective CHOI who falls into a deep trouble. The story will be interesting for those who watch it in CHOI’s shoes. I hope many will look back at their past through his story and this film.”
Along with veteran actor SON Hyun-ju,
Don LEE and
CHOI Daniel perform as a detective and a questionable man, respectively. Also, rising star PARK Seo-jun acts as a young detective, who holds an important key to the story. What is interesting about
The Chronicles of Evil is that it’s a realistic thriller. Cinematographer PARK Jong-cheol commented, “In order to make a realistic thriller, we avoided any extreme camera works. We focused on the faces of the actors as the psychology of the characters was an important element of the film.”
