Yeongjae(CHOI Woo-sik) is a high school student who grew up at “Isaac’s Home”, a group home that he entrusted himself as a child to avoid his immature and reckless father. As a high school student, he is now too old to stay at the group home. He shudders at the thought of returning to his incompetent father, but his age prevents him from remaining at the group home. To extend his stay at “Isaac’s Home”, he falsely aspires to serve as a priest.

Yeongjae has secretly stolen and sold donated goods and knows better than to put his belief in any other being, including God. However, in order to enter a Catholic boarding school he claims he wants to become a priest and advertises his religious faith to the facility director and curate by ardently attending Mass. Beomtae, Yeongjae’s sole friend at Isaac’s Home, does not approve of Yeongjae’s double-sided character, but at the same time he pities Yeongjae. Beomtae chooses not to fawn over the director couple like Yeongjae does with his detestable flatteries. He is also too old to remain at the group home but once he finds out he cannot go back to his father, he resorts to extreme measures. This results in making it even more difficult for Yeongjae to extend his stay at Isaac’s Home.

As the director couple starts to show signs of displeasure with Yeongjae at the group home, he looks for other places, but having nowhere to go he becomes extremely anxious. His desire to remain at the facility is so strong he even turns his back on his only friend Beomtae. Despite all his efforts, one day his father visits the group home to entrust once again his little brother Minjae, and this unleashes Yeongjae's despair, rage and havoc.

At the age of 23, the promising young director KIM was invited to the 2010 Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation for his short FROZEN LAND. Later, director KIM earned favorable reviews at various film festivals for short films such as NEGLIGENCE OF SERVICE, NIGHT BUGS, NIGHT MARKET.

Now director KIM has come out with a special feature debut SET ME FREE, which is based on his autobiographical story of his youth. Through the film, not only does he open up and disclose what was hidden deep inside his heart, but also develops a deeper and stronger cinematic world. SET ME FREE portrays the unique view of Director KIM and his taciturn sensibility with a delicate and sharp direction style.

Greatly impressed by CHOI Wook-shik’s performance in the short film ETUDE, SOLO, Director set his eye on CHOI as his leading role for SET ME FREE. In CHOI’s first feature film as the main character, he plays ‘Yeongjae’ a handsome boy with a rebellious face who conjures both pain and sympathy to the audience. To extend his stay at the group home, Yeongjae strives for a false dream and such sentiments and detailed emotions are perfectly expressed by CHOI.
