  • [39th TIFF Special Report] Introducing the Festival Village at the Toronto International Film Festival①
  • by June KIM /  Sep 05, 2014
  • Don’t Get Lost in the Festival Jungle

This year marks the 39th Toronto International Film Festival and no matter how manyyears in the profession, it’s hard for any guest to decipher where what is unless you’ve actually been there. Here is the list of important venues that you should familiarize yourself while walking down the street of King.

    TIFF Bell Lightbox

TIFF Bell Lightbox, commonly called as TBLB is the house of the festival. It opened doors in 2010 and now holds film screenings all year round in its 5 screens, while also consisting of 2 galleries and a learning studio where workshops can take place.  The learning studios which are on the 3rd floor of the building changes into a press and industry space during the festival, where you are able to watch screeners of films that you’ve missed or will miss during the festival. The five screens at TBLB which are on the 2nd and 3rd floorsboast for a great sound system and also can support many types of formats, including 70mm film.

Considered as the home to the industry delegates is the Hyatt Hotel. It houses the industry office, the booths of national promotion agencies and film companies, as well as a business centre in the basement with computers available for those on the run. The place will be the first stop for any industry delegates who need to pick up passes, get tickets, meet other film industry personnel, or ask any questions. It is the closest building to the TIFF Bell Lightbox, as they sit side by side on the North side of King Street – Hyatt on the left and TBLB on the right.

    Princess of Wales Theatre

Then covering the other side of TBLB is the Princess of Wales Theatre (PoW) which sits just across the street.

Normally the building is used for musicals and theatre plays, but during the festival the prestigious building transforms into a film theater. It has had many premieres including Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave in 2013, creating massive red carpet crowd, and rush line-ups.
