Born in 1990, KIM Tae-ri, having started acting at her college’s theater club, was enjoying it so much that she decided to make it her career. Having entered the Iru Theatre Troupe after graduation, she spent her first year working in the backstage, until she was officially cast in 2012 as an understudy for “Spoonface Steinberg”, although she ultimately didn’t get to actually go on stage. She did however perform in “Pansy” and “To ask about love”, and was double-cast one year later for the rerun of “Spoonface Steinberg”.
Meanwhile, she also appeared in a few short movies, such as <Moon young> (2015) which premiered at the Seoul Independent Film Festival. She went to many auditions for films and faced many rejections, due in parts because she was considered by many too old to start a career in mainstream movies. However, it is after one of these auditions that she was chosen by Park Chan-wook himself from among 1’500 candidates to take the lead in <The Handmaiden> (2016). And so, with her debut film, KIM got to walk the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival and was named Best New Actress at the Director’s Cut Awards, the Blue Dragon Film Awards, and the Asian Film Awards. On top of that, the movie was a commercial success with more than 4 million admissions in Korea, a high figure given its R-rating.
Having become the new rising star of Korean cinema overnight, KIM was cast for JANG Joon-hwan’s historical drama <1987: When the Day Comes> (2017) and YIM Soon-rye’s LITTLE FOREST (2018). While the former managed to fare very well against competing Korean blockbusters with 7.2 million admissions, the latter was a sleeper hit that benefitted from a positive word of mouth. After a cameo appearance in the series <Entourage>, she made her big television debut in 2018 with the drama series <Mr. Sunshine> set in the 19th century.
