Born in 1981, Lee Ilhyung entered the Drama and Film College of Chung-Ang University in 1999 and debuted as an assistant director on various commercial films. His first credit was in Yoon Jongbin’s second film, the host drama <Beastie Boys> (2008). Three years later, he participated as an assistant director in the big-budget war epic <My Way>, from director Kang Jekyu. Another three years later, he worked with director Yoon again for the period action epic <KUNDO : Age of the Rampant>, featuring Ha Jungwoo and Gang Dongwon. In 2016, he was finally offered an opportunity to move to the director’s chair when he teamed up with the production company SANAI Pictures to make the thriller <A Violent Prosecutor>. Reuniting with actor Gang once again and working with superstar Hwang Jungmin for the first time, the film followed a prosecutor who is framed and sent to jail but then engages the help of a low-level hoodlum to uncover the conspiracy behind his incarceration. Released during the Lunar New Year, the film was an enormous hit for distributor Showbox, replicating the success of other recent titles with political corruption themes such as <Veteran> and <Inside Men>. In his 2020 thriller <REMEMBER>, based on the Canada-Germany co-produced <Remember>, Lee worked once again with Lee Sungmin in a tale of a revenge served cold by an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s who sets out to get even with the people who caused his family to be decimated during the Japanese Occupation.
