Cineworld is director LEE Joon-ik’s film production and distribution company. Having started out as a commercial agency in 1987 (under the name Cinecity), it made a first venture into film production and distribution in 1993 with LEE’s directing debut <Kid Cop> (1993). It wasn’t until 1998 however that Cineworld really branched out into film with the production of JANG Jin’s <The Spy> (1999). The studio made its name producing period action film <The Anarchists> (2000), about the Korean independence fighters of the 1920s, as well as the comedy <Hi, Dharma> (2001). Cineworld is mostly remembered for LEE’s own works, such as the critically-acclaimed <King and the Clown> (2005) which famously swiped the Grand Bell Awards – seven wins including Best Film and Best Director – and became at the time the most watched Korean film ever with 12.3 million admissions.
