The Night Owl Topped the Box Office for 3 Consecutive Weekends, Surpassing 2.52 Million Viewers

The Japanese Romance Film, Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight, Soared to 3rd Place

 


 

The Night Owl, the costume drama thriller directed by Ahn Taejin and starring Ryu Junyeol and Yoo Haijin, has topped at the box office success for three consecutive weeks.

 

According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) from December 9 to 12, The Night Owl secured the top at the box office in the third week of its release, recording 468,537 viewers and 47.4% of sales. Taking up 50% of the ticket sales, the film is dominating the theater district. The Night Owl, which has been leading the box office since its release on November 23, has accumulated 2,520,494 viewers, making it one of the most popular movies in 2022. The Night Owl is a mid-scaled historical drama with a production cost of 9 billion won. Its break-even point is 2.1 million viewers. Securing its position at the top of the box office until the 3rd week of its release, the film has surpassed the break-even point. 

 

Meanwhile, the comedy film, Men of Plastic, starring Don Lee and Jung Kyungho, ranked 2nd place with 93,519 weekend viewers and 9.2% sales. The total audience for Men of Plastic so far is 555,336.

 

3rd place is the Japanese romance movie, Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight. The number of weekend viewers is 84,921 with 8.8% sales, and the total audience is 180.781 so far. Released on November 30, the film started at No. 9 at the box office in its opening week, but it soared to No. 3 over the weekend. The film is a romance film depicting the first love of a high school girl who is suffering from amnesia. Compared to Men of Plastic which won 2nd place, the number of screens and screenings of the Japanese film is about a third, but the ranking is steadily rising through word of mouth. 

 

4th place is A Birth, which depicts the life of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Catholic priest in the Joseon Dynasty. The film attracted 70,826 weekend audiences with 6.7% sales. The film was produced to commemorate the designation of St. Andrew Kim Taegon as a UNESCO World Monument in 2021, and actor Yoon Siyoon played the role of St. Andrew Kim Taegon. 

 

This Wednesday, Avatar: The Ways of Water will be released in Korea for the first time in the world, and the reservation rate is 87.1%, drawing attention to set a new record at the box office in the 2nd week of December.
