Audiences Choose INTIMATE STRANGERS over THE VILLAGERS

Word of Mouth Keeps Holdovers On Top

Despite high fine dust levels and a lack of enticing new titles, audiences were out in force over the weekend as last week’s new films picked up steam at the box office. Local fare continued to dominate with a 58% share of the 2.3 million tickets sold, a slight gain on the previous week.

With another million tickets (USD 7.83 million) sold over the weekend, representing a scant 15% drop, last week’s champ Intimate Strangers had no trouble holding on to the top spot. The dinner party gone wrong comedy-drama has so far amassed a stellar 3.38 million admissions (USD 25.11 million) for distributor Lotte Entertainment.

Even more impressive was Bohemian Rhapsody’s 50% rise in second place as it saw its weekend take swell to 784,000 entries (USD 6.39 million). With strong word of mouth ensuring that the biopic has more in store, the total currently stands at a sturdy 1.84 million sales (USD 14.59 million).

It was a different story with the new recruits as The Villagers, the latest thriller vehicle for Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok) had a poor start down in third place with 242,000 viewers (USD 1.85 million). Since its Wednesday opening, the film has taken in a mere 352,000 spectators (USD 2.62 million).

Local period horror The Wrath, a remake of the local 80s chiller Woman’s Wail, had an even poorer start in fourth with just 43,000 sales (USD 343,000) recorded over the weekend and 56,000 admissions (USD 440,000) spread over its first five days.

Another healthy holdover closed out the top five, as faith-based pic Paul, Apostle of Christ rose two spots and 39% as it added 37,000 entries (USD 274,000) to bring its total to 109,000 sales (USD 765,000) to date.

While Bohemian Rhapsody and Intimate Strangers still figure strongly on the reservations chart, the top two places belong to an unexpected battle in the making. Harry Potter spin-off sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is pre-selling strongly, but as of this writing, it’s settling for second place, just behind Burn the Stage: The Movie, a concert film for the sensationally popular music act BTS.
